Men’s Teams Winter 08/09 final match report

At the conclusion of the winter season, the headline results for the 6 men’s teams are as follows; 1 division winner, 2 teams promoted and 0 teams relegated.

Team bragging rights go to the Windsor 5th team led by Christopher, who pipped the 6th team to win Division 6 East. Both teams gain promotion, although in the much anticipated 5 Vs 6 match, Charles’ 6th team took the honours with a convincing win.

Teams 3 and 4 finished a very creditable mid-table in their respective divisions, 2 and 4. Julian’s 3rd team standing shows the depth of quality in the men’s teams as they compete in a division with 4 other club’s first teams and 3 other clubs second teams. Not to be out done though, Andrew’s 4th team also sit in a division with 4 other club’s first teams and 3 other clubs second teams – so arguably an even tougher task to reach their 3rd place finish!

In the top Berkshire division, the 1st team narrowly missed out on winning the title by 2 points, while the 2nd team succeeded in escaping relegation by one set! Windsor 2 escaped relegation in their last match, beating Esporta 1 to reach safety.

Caversham 1 won the Berkshire Winter Division 1 title again, ahead of Windsor 1 with the losing draw against Caversham 1 proving crucial! The team are out for revenge in the summer though. In the Windsor 1 ranking stakes, Kieran and Ben won the Champagne with 11 wins out of 12 and 8 wins out of 14 respectively (at least 3 matches had to be played in).

Mens match practice every Monday night from 7pm has now started, so please come down and join the team practice sessions which will be organised by the team captains on the night.

Good luck to all the teams for the summer season and well done to those who competed this past winter!

Thanks,

Curtis

Men’s Teams Winter 08/09 match report

At the mid-way break in the winter season for Windsor’s 6 men’s teams, it has been a mixed bag in terms of results, but as ever, not for lack of effort!

The first team is currently just behind Caversham 1, who are leading Berkshire Division 1, with 2 wins and a losing draw to their name. Kieran and Ben Smith have played in all the matches and pulled out some great wins on wet and cold Sunday mornings to maintain a 0.833 win percentage as a pair. With 4 matches remaining, the availability of the Windsor coaches and former Windsor Singles Champion Andy Hamar, recently returned from US College tennis could help make this a winning season (no pressure!).

Also in Division 1 is Windsor’s second team who,  with their captain Graeme still out injured, have found results hard to come by, but with their toughest matches out of the way, there is a way out of the relegation fight when matches resume at the end of January.

In Division 2, the third team registered their first win in the last match before the Christmas break last weekend. This lifted them out of the bottom 2, in what is a very tough league for a club’s third team, with many of the matches they play against tough first club team opposition.

The men’s fourth team play in Division 4 and currently sit mid-table with a win and a loss. After a number of postponements, there is a backlog of 5 matches to be played between January and March next year.

Division 6 East is the home for the fifth and sixth team, captained by Christopher and Charles respectively. Weather and player availability has caused the majority of their matches to be postponed this year. With the showdown between the two teams delayed till next year, now is the time to let the captains know if you would like to play team tennis in this social, but still competitive environment.

Finally, a big thanks to all those that have played matches this year for the men’s teams. If you are interested in playing for any of the teams in the new year, a Men’s Team Tennis board is due to be put up in the club over Christmas, complete with all the match dates and space to sign up if you are available.
